And the evil comes, too, as imaginary massacres fill the streets with blood, the dead return to question the living, and profound anxiety drives hundreds to suicide. Equivocal Beings : Politics, Gender and Sentimentality in the 1790's - Wollstonecraft, Radcliffe, Burney, Austen

Description

In the wake of the French Revolution, Edmund Burke argued that civil order depended upon the masculine cultivation of traditionally feminine qualities such as sentiment, tenderness, veneration, awe and gratitude. Writers as diverse as Sterne, Goldsmith, Burke and Rousseau were politically motivated to represent authority figures as men of feeling, but denied women comparable authority by representing their feelings as inferior, pathological or criminal. Focusing on Mary Wollstonecraft, Ann Radcliffe, Frances Burney and Jane Austen, this work examines the legacy male sentimentality left for women of various political persuasions. Demonstrating the interrelationships among politics, gender and feeling in the fiction of this period, it provides detailed readings of Wollstonecraft, Radcliffe and Burney, and treats the qualities that were once thought to mar their work - grotesqueness, strain and excess - as indices of ideological conflict and as strategies of representation during a period of profound political conflict. The author maintains that the reactionary reassertion of male sentimentality as a political duty displaced customary gender roles, rendering women, in Wollstonecraft's words, "equivocal beings."

The sudden death of a Hollywood actor during a production of "King Lear" marks the beginning of the world's dissolution in a story told at various past and future times from the perspectives of the actor and four of his associates. In Alice's Equivocal Beings : Politics, Gender and Sentimentality in the 1790's - Wollstonecraft, Radcliffe, Burney, Austen free pdf Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, Lewis Carroll created fantastic worlds that continue to delight and trouble readers of all ages today. What is often overlooked, however, is that Carroll conceived his Alice books during the 1860s, a moment of intense intellectual upheaval, as new scientific, linguistic, educational, and mathematical ideas flourished around him, in Oxford, and far beyond. Alice in Space reveals the contexts within which the Alice books first lived, bringing back the zest to jokes lost over time and poignancy to hidden references. Gillian Beer explores Carroll's work through the speculative gaze of Alice, for whom no authority is unquestioned and everything can speak. Parody and Punch, evolutionary debates, philosophical dialogues, educational works for children, math and logic, manners and rituals, dream theory and childhood studies all fueled the fireworks.

Boyd Keith Swigger: The MLS Project : An Assessment after Sixty Years

The MLS Project : An Assessment after Sixty Years

Description

In 1951, the American Library Association (ALA) Council approved new standards for accrediting library education programs. These standards shifted accreditation from the bachelor's degree to the master's degree, making the master's degree in library science the professional credential for entry into the profession. At the time, librarians believed this change would transform the practice of librarianship, the nature of library education, and the social standing of librarianship as an occupation. In The MLS Project: An Assessment after Sixty Years, Boyd Keith Swigger examines the reasons the American Library Association enacted the change and looks at the consequences of this decision. Reviewing the last several decades, Swigger addresses a number of concerns: What were librarians' and library educators' arguments for changing the system of library education? What problems were they trying to solve? What were their objectives? Did the change in the structure of library education solve the problems perceived in the late 1940s? Have the objectives set then been accomplished in the half century since? What have been the intended and unintended outcomes of the change? In his review, Swigger draws general conclusions about the MLS Project, the perception of librarianship, libraries, the developments of curriculums in library schools, and how librarianship compares to the new information professions. The MLS Project is an informative and critical evaluation that every librarian should read.

Marco Vichi,Stephen Sartarelli: Death in Sardinia

Death in Sardinia

Description

SHORTLISTED FOR THE CRIME WRITERS' ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL DAGGER 2013. Florence, 1965. A man is found murdered, a pair of scissors stuck through his throat. Only one thing is known about him - he was a loan shark, who ruined and blackmailed the vulnerable men and women who would come to him for help. Inspector Bordelli prepares to launch a murder investigation. But the case will be a tough one for him, arousing mixed emotions: the desire for justice conflicting with a deep hostility for the victim. And he is missing his young police sidekick, Piras, who is convalescing at his parents' home in Sardinia. But Piras hasn't been recuperating for long before he too has a mysterious death to deal with ...

On March 16, 1244, over 200 Cathars were captured in their fortress stronghold of Montsegur and were burned alive by troops of the Inquisition. While some Cathar enclaves survived into the next century, this was the death blow to a religion that had been a powerful symbol of Occitain sovereignty against the designs of the French monarchy and the papacy. History has recorded that four high-ranking Cathar perfecticarried a great treasure out of Montsegur the night before its fall, a fact that led rebel Huguenots of the 17th century and members of Hitler's S.S. to believe that an enormous treasure or weapon of awesome spiritual power lay hidden somewhere nearby the ruins of the former Cathar stronghold. Seeking to untangle the true from the false, Celtic and medieval scholar Jean Markale meticulously searches through the obscure history of the Cathars, tracing their roots back to the ancient Zoroastrian religion of Persia. He examines Death in Sardinia download book what earned the Cathars--who practiced vegetarianism, non-violence, and tolerance--the ruthless persecution of both the Church and the state.

Robert Fyall: Now My Eyes Have Seen You: Images of Creation and Evil in the Book of Job

Now My Eyes Have Seen You: Images of Creation and Evil in the Book of Job

Description

Few biblical texts are more daunting, and yet more fascinating, than the book of Job - and few have been the subject of such diverse interpretation. For Robert Fyall, the mystery of God's ways and the appalling evil and suffering in the world are at the heart of Job's significant contribution to the canon. This study offers a holistic reading of the book, with particular reference to its depiction of creation and evil, and find significant clues to its meaning in the striking imagery it uses. Dr Fyall takes seriously the literary and artistic integrity of Job, as well as its theological profundity. He concludes that the book is not so much about suffering per se as about creation, providence and knowing God, and how - in the crucible of suffering - these are to be understood. He encourages us to listen to this remarkable literature, to be moved by it, and to see its progress from shrieking protest to repentance and vision.

They re considered deadly because of their capacity to generate other evils. The truth is, we all sin and we do it all the time in fact, usually several times over before breakfast! But human Now My Eyes Have Seen You: Images of Creation and Evil in the Book of Job download ebook pdf behavior, argues social psychologist Simon Laham, is more complex than good or evil. In psychology, these sins aren t considered morally wrong or even uniformly bad, but are treated rather as complex and interesting psychological states that if, indulged wisely, can be functional, adaptive, and lead to a range of positive effects. Sisters Celeste and Corinne have each created an alpha-male hero for their bestselling novels: devilishly sensual warriors who, unbeknownst to their creators, are more real than the ladies ever imagined. Until the strapping men come to life and inhabit more than the sisters? imagination.

Can Christianity Cure Obsessive-compulsive Disorder?: A Psychiatrist Explores the Role of Faith in Treatment

Description

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a relentless condition, the primary symptom being the occurrence of terrifying ideas, images, and urges that jump into a person's mind and return again and again, despite the individual's attempt to remove them. Christians who suffer from OCD may grapple with additional guilt, as the undesired thoughts are frequently of a spiritual nature. Yet people may be surprised to learn that some of the greatest leaders in Christian history also struggled with this malady. What did they experience? How did they cope? Were they able to overcome these tormenting, often violent, obsessions? Where did God fit into the picture? Ian Osborn shares the personal accounts of Martin Luther, John Bunyan, and Saint ThErEse of Lisieux, as well as his own story, in exploring how faith and science work together to address this complex issue.

Raven and her brother, Wraith, must use Raven's Hex powers and Wraith's street skills to save first their long-lost sister, and then the entire Hex community. But before they start, Raven must overcome her mantra: work alone and think only of herself. Even then the challenges don't stop as they must crack the top-secret and high-tech security of the CPS, ally with a political-terrorist group, and then ultimately take down the evil European Federation. If you don't plan on working hard all your life this is the book for you. If you're ready to retire (or would like to retire early enough to enjoy the retirement years) you can learn from Robert's story of how he and his wife Kim started with nothing and 'retired' financially free in less than 10 years. Omon Ra, by the gifted Russian writer Victor Pelevin, is a pointed, dead-on-satire of the now-defunct Soviet space program, and a moving account of a cosmonaut's coming-of-age. The story is told in the beguiling voice of its young protagonist, Omon Ra, whose odd name combines a term for the Soviet Working Memory and Academic Learning: Assessment and Intervention download ebook special forces with the name of the sun god in Egyptian mythology. Ever since he was a boy, Omon has dreamed of flying in space. He enrolls in a training program for cosmonauts, only to learn that his first assignment will also be his last. For although the Soviet space program claims to carry out its missions with unmanned rockets, its scientists haven't yet mastered the necessary technology; so Omon is to drive a supposedly unmanned landing vehicle across the moon's surface, put in place a device that will emit the words of Lenin into space, and then remain on the moon, abandoned, until he dies. The voyage that results combines the absurdity of Soviet protocol with the wonder and pathos of space flight. As told in Pelevin's artful prose, the story of Omon's ill-fated trip to the moon has the nimbleness and buoyancy of the best contemporary Western fiction as well as the sting of great Russian satire.

Mahabharata: 35th Anniversary Edition pdf, epub, mobi

William Buck,Shirley Triest,B. A. van Nooten: Mahabharata: 35th Anniversary Edition

Mahabharata: 35th Anniversary Edition

Description

Few works in world literature have inspired so vast an audience, in nations with radically different languages and cultures, as the "Ramayana" and "Mahabharata", two Sanskrit verse epics written some 2,000 years ago. In "Ramayana" (written by a poet known to us as Valmiki), William Buck has retold the story of Prince Rama - with all its nobility of spirit, courtly intrigue, heroic renunciation, fierce battles, and triumph of good over evil - in a length and manner that will make the great Indian epics accessible to the contemporary reader. The same is true for the "Mahabharata" - in its original Sanskrit, probably the longest Indian epic ever composed. It is the story of a dynastic struggle, between the Kurus and Pandavas, for land. In his introduction, Sanskritist B. A. van Nooten notes, "Apart from William Buck's rendition [no other English version has] been able to capture the blend of religion and martial spirit that pervades the original epic". Presented accessibly for the general reader without compromising the spirit and lyricism of the originals, William Buck's "Ramayana" and "Mahabharata" capture the essence of the Indian cultural heritage.

Forced to face the greatest fears of the dark ages--witchcraft, werewolves, madness--Luca and Isolde embark on a search for truth, their own destinies, and even love as they take the unknown ways to the real historical figure who defends the boundaries of Christendom and holds the secrets of the Order of Darkness. Following on from his successful Drawing Geometry, Jon Allen explores the creation of the many-sided three-dimensional forms known as the Platonic and Archimedean solids. Based on patterns of equally spaced points on a sphere, these polyhedra have been the fundamentals of geometric exploration for millennia. Many professionals find they need to be Mahabharata: 35th Anniversary Edition free download pdf able to build three-dimensional shapes accurately, and understand the principles behind them. This unique book shows them how to make models of all the Platonic and Archimedean solids, as well as several other polyhedra and stellated forms. It provides step-by-step instructions for constructing the three-dimensional forms, as well as showing how to draw out accurately the geometry of the paperfold nets. Beginners and experienced artists and designers alike will find this book a source of practical guidance, as well as delight and inspiration which will amply repay the careful attention needed to construct the models.
